The purspose of this study is to find out the actual condition of the vocational highschool students smoking and related factors and their degree of the nicotine dependency. To do so, I conducted a qustionnaire survey on 946 second year-students attending the vocational high schools located in Taegu City during Nov. 1999.
The following is the result I got after analyzing the data from the questionnaire survey.
In case of the male students, the ratio of the presently smoking students reached 42.8%, but in the female students case, the ratio was 10.8%.
And the ratio of the students smoking presently did not vary much in relation with the degree of the student’s recognition about the correlation between the smoking and the health and the correlation between the smoking and the cancer and the pulmonary malfunctioning.
But in the male students case, the lower the degree of the recognition on the correlation between smoking and cardiac disease, the higher the ratio of the presently smoking students(p<0.05).
The mean of the nicotine dependency of the presently smoking students is 4.36 in male students case. But in female students case it turned out to be 4.57. The ratio of the students whose mark is over 8 which is the state where they can show the withdrawal symptoms when stopping smoking was 4.2% in male students case, but it was 5.6% in female students case.
In male students case, their fathers levels of education, their low scholarly achievement, and their experience of the strong liquor were the proportional factors that cause them to have smoking experience(p<0.01).
In female students case, their mothers smoking(p<0.05), their low academic achievement(p<0.01), the experience of the drinking strong liquor(p<0.05), the experience fo the drug abuse(p<0.05) and the experience of the obscene materials(p<0.01) were the factors that have strong influences on their smoking experience.
When it comes to the degree of the nicotine dependency of the male students, the lower the scholarly achievement, the higher the rate of the smoking experience and the degree of the nicotine dependency. And the drinking experience is also a proportional factor that cause the nicotine dependency(p<0.01).
